Cherry Blossom Engagement Session

The cherry blossoms – or March Madness for photographers – arrived at the end of March. I was down in the thick of it not once, but five different mornings (at sunrise!) to catch these beautiful blooms while they lasted! This time it was for Alexandra and Rob’s cherry blossom engagement session.

Alexandra and Rob are one of my 2022 couples. They held off on their engagement session for months with the specific goal of having their photos taken during peak bloom at the Tidal Basin. Because of COVID restrictions, it had been two years since I had been down to see the cherry blossoms in bloom. They were definitely worth the extra early wake-up call. I forgot just how much I love doing engagement sessions during this time!

From Cloudy to Bright and Beautiful

After a mad rush to find parking, it seemed like it was going to be an overcast and dreary morning. However, as we started portraits around the Jefferson Memorial, which is finally done with renovations, the clouds dissolved. The prettiest golden glow started to appear along the horizon. After a few photos inside the marble rotunda, we headed out to brave the crowds around the Basin and capture photos with the cherry blossoms. Alexandra and Rob truly caught them at their peak. The fluffy pink canopies were everywhere. The petals floated in the wind and the oldest branches draped down over the water creating dramatic curtains of flowers. These were perfect for photo backdrops. We looped all the way around the Tidal Basin, making our way from the Jefferson to the FDR Memorial to MLK, dodging tourists and other photo sessions.

Alexandra and Rob’s wedding is in just a few months at District Winery in the heart of Navy Yard. They first met in college and have been together for 8 years. I actually first met them at JMU as well! I was just beginning to grow my photography business and Alexandra booked me to capture their graduation portraits around JMU’s Quad. It’s been so fun to get to reunite with them for this season of their life. I can’t wait for all the magic that their wedding day is going to bring!
